Glossary of Terms:

  • Frame Relay: Frame Relay allows your company to connect multiple locations that are geographically spread throughout any given area that need to send and receive data to and from each other in a highly reliable, fast and cost effective way. This is also know as a WAN (wide area network). Frame Relay is also a highly effective way to access the Internet from moderate (56k) to high speeds (T-1).
  • ATM: Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A high-speed copper or fiber optic voice, video & data communications technology with speeds ranging from T-1 (1.54 Mbps) up to T-3 (45 Mbps or approx. 28 T-1s). ATM uses fixed length packets called cells to transfer information.
  • DSL: Digital subscriber lines carry data at high speeds over standard copper telephone wires. With DSL, data can be delivered at a rate of 1.5 mbps (around 30 times faster than through a 56-kbps modem). Also, DSL users can receive voice and data simultaneously, so small offices can leave computers plugged into the Net without interrupting phone connections.
